What the job really involves
An OnlyFans chatter answers fan messages on behalf of a creator, usually as an employee or contractor of a management agency. The creator still owns the page and the content; the agency handles the commercial side, and chatters keep conversations going around the clock so fans feel heard and buy paid messages, custom requests and subscriptions. The same work exists on Fansly and similar subscription platforms.
A typical shift looks like this:
- Reading the creator’s profile notes: tone of voice, boundaries, content already sent, prices and topics to avoid.
- Replying to incoming messages quickly and in character, often across several conversations at once.
- Offering pay-per-view messages and bundles at the right moment, following the agency’s price list.
- Logging notes on each fan, such as purchase history and preferences, so the next chatter can continue smoothly.
- Flagging problems: refund requests, abusive users, anything that looks like an underage user, which must be escalated immediately.
The work is text-based and remote. You never appear on camera, and serious agencies never ask you to share your own photos.

Skills agencies look for
Agencies hire chatters for revenue, so they test the skills that turn a conversation into a sale without making it feel like one.
- Written English. Natural, casual US English with correct spelling. Most fans are in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and stiff phrasing loses sales.
- Typing speed. Many agencies ask for at least 50 to 60 words per minute with high accuracy, and some prefer 70 or more for busy pages.
- Sales sense. Knowing when to offer something, how to handle “too expensive”, and when to simply keep chatting.
- Character discipline. Staying consistent with the creator’s persona and boundaries across hundreds of messages.
- Emotional steadiness. Handling rude or lonely users calmly and knowing when to escalate.
- Reliability. Logging in on time for your shift; agencies depend on full coverage of every time zone.
Prior experience in sales chat, customer support, copywriting or social media management helps, but many agencies train beginners who show strong writing in the test.
03
The test task and how to pass it
Almost every agency runs a short trial before hiring. Common formats include a typing test, a written role-play where a recruiter plays a fan, or a sample set of fan messages you answer while trying to sell a pay-per-view item at a set price. Some agencies run a paid trial shift instead.
- Read the brief twice. Note the persona, the price and any rules about what not to say.
- Write short, warm replies that ask questions back. Long monologues read like a script.
- Make the offer once the fan is engaged, and handle an objection without dropping the price at the first push.
- Check spelling before sending. Typos cost points in almost every test.
- Keep everything professional and non-explicit unless the brief clearly requires otherwise.
A real trial is either unpaid and short (under an hour) or paid at a stated rate. A test that runs for days without pay is free labour, not an assessment.
04
How chatters are paid
Pay structures vary widely between agencies and regions, but most fall into one of three models:
| Model | How it works | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly base | A fixed rate per logged hour, paid weekly or every two weeks. | Beginners who want predictable income. |
| Commission only | A percentage of sales you generate, often in the range of a few percent up to around 10 percent. | Experienced sellers on high-traffic pages. |
| Base plus commission | A lower hourly base plus a smaller share of sales. | Most chatters, and the most common model. |
Night and weekend shifts sometimes pay a premium. For commonly reported hourly ranges by region, see how much OnlyFans chatters make. Always get the model, the rate and the payment schedule in writing before your first shift.
05
Shifts, tools and working conditions
Agencies usually split the day into shifts of six to eight hours so that each page is covered 24 hours a day. You may be assigned one creator or several. Expect to work some nights and weekends, since fan activity peaks in US evenings.
Tools vary, but you will typically use the platform’s own messaging inbox or a dedicated chat management dashboard the agency provides, a shared notes system or spreadsheet for fan history, and a team chat app for shift handovers. You need a reliable computer and stable internet; agencies should give you access through your own login, never by sharing the creator’s password with you on a personal device. Ask how access is controlled and how fan data is kept private.
06
Red flags when applying
- Paying for “chatter training”, a course or a starter kit before you are hired.
- No written agreement on pay, or commission with no way to see the sales you made.
- Being asked to send personal photos or to pretend to be the creator on video.
- Instructions to deceive fans about refunds or to continue chatting with users who appear to be minors.
- Recruiters who only talk through disposable accounts and will not name the agency.

Questions people ask
Do you need experience to become an OnlyFans chatter?
Not always. Many agencies hire beginners who pass a writing and typing test, although sales chat or customer support experience helps you get better-paid roles faster.
How fast do you need to type?
Many agencies ask for around 50 to 60 words per minute with high accuracy, and busy pages often prefer 70 or more.
Is OnlyFans chatting a remote job?
Yes, almost always. You work from your own computer in scheduled shifts, often covering US evening hours.
Do OnlyFans chatters have to show their face?
No. Chatting is text-only work. A legitimate agency never asks a chatter for personal photos or video.
